Patient participation group

The Smithy Surgery’s patient participation group works with the GPs and practice staff to improve services and promote health in the local community. Also, the group seeks to gain knowledge of the local health economy across Tameside and Glossop and nationally.

We are a friendly group and welcome any patient of The Smithy Surgery at the patient participation group meetings.

A message from our Chair:

"As Chair of the patient participation group, I would like to invite you to come along to our lively and interesting meetings. We have achieved quite a lot during our five years of existence working along with the doctors and staff of The Smithy Surgery.

We meet once a month, so why not come along and see what we do. If you would like to find out more about the patient participation group (before taking the decision to come to one of our meetings), please contact me, David Collins, on 07834 337 761 or Mai Spencer, secretary, on 07787 435 515, to answer any questions you might have. We look forward to seeing you at one of our meetings – you can be assured of a warm welcome."

Dates for patient participation group meetings

From January 2019 all meetings will be held on Thursday afternoons starting at 2pm and finishing no later than 3.30pm.

You can contact the Patient Participation Group through or by leaving a message at reception.

All Smithy Surgery patients are welcome at monthly meetings.

Patient Neighbourhood Groups

Representatives from The Smithy Surgery patient participation group meet with representatives from other local patient participation groups every month. The Smithy Surgery has patients in both Tameside and Glossopdale so the patient participation group sends two representatives to the Hyde, Hollingworth and Longdendale patient neighbourhood group and two more representatives to the Glossopdale patient neighbourhood group.

Neighbourhood groups exchange ideas and discuss problems or queries raised by individual patient participation groups. Also, they also send a patient representative to sit on both the Hyde and Glossop GP neighbourhood groups. The GP groups discuss matters concerning general practice and current and future plans for primary care in Tameside and Glossop.

Meetings are usually held on the last Thursday of every month.
