Patients have had the opportunity to seek employment and health advice at a recent drop-in session.
The event, hosted by Ashton GP Service on 25 April, brought together the practice team, social prescribers and representatives from WorkWell, a service that helps people with health conditions overcome barriers to return to work, stay in work or find work.
The session was open to patients who are employed, unemployed or hoping to return to work, including those with physical or learning disabilities, autism or other long-term health issues.
Gemma Rowlinson, senior administrator, said by working with services like WorkWell, they can help patients take positive steps, whatever their situation.
“Seeing so many patients getting advice that could make a real difference to their lives was brilliant,” she said.
“WorkWell offered support with finding and staying in employment, building skills and confidence, managing health at work, workplace adjustments and accessing specialist programmes.
“Social prescribers were also on hand to connect patients with local groups, wellbeing activities and community services. They explained what factors could be negatively affecting patients, such as loneliness and housing or financial issues.
“The practice team welcomed everyone, answered questions and signposted patients to the right support.
“It was great to bring all these services together for patients to benefit from them.”
The idea for the session came after a patient asked to stay inside the practice to keep warm while waiting for an urgent appointment in January. Gemma informed him about local food banks, warm hubs and other community support. That conversation highlighted the broader challenges patients face and led to the creation of regular drop-in sessions.
