A GP and care co-ordinator have shown exemplary commitment to ensuring the safety of a young patient.

When a mother and her seven-week-old baby arrived via Uber at gtd healthcare’s head office, Dr Simon Westmerland, GP, and Cass Mottram, senior care co-ordinator, went above and beyond to facilitate and provide the necessary care.

The mum was under the impression that she had arrived at the correct place for her baby’s scheduled MRI appointment. The baby had been experiencing persistent coughing and sneezing for the past 24 hours, prompting the mother's concern and need for an appointment.

Cass empathised with the mother who was upset when she realised she had arrived at the wrong location.

“Witnessing the impact of this honest mistake, I wanted to see how we could help in any way possible,” she explained.

“Rather than sending her to the MRI for her appointment, I spoke with Dr Westmerland, who was working in the hub at the time, and he consented to seeing the patient at head office.”

The mother was led to a private room because the baby needed breastfeeding and was offered a drink to help comfort and relax her.

Afterwards, Dr Westmerland undertook a full examination of the young patient, reassured the mother and provided self-care advice. The mother was very appreciative of the care she and her baby received.

David Beckett, gtd healthcare's chief executive, added: “This is an excellent example of providing person-centred care, which reinforces our values, particularly that of putting patients first. Their work serves as a testament to the dedication and commitment of the individuals involved, highlighting their devotion to exceptional patient care.”
