A central Manchester health centre is delivering its first vaccination clinic in partnership with a national lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) charity.

gtd healthcare’s City Health Centre has teamed up with the LGBT foundation to deliver a free and confidential flu vaccination clinic for people living with HIV who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or questioning.

The flu clinic will be open to all LGBT people living with HIV and not just those registered as patients at City Health Centre. Patients who want to book an appointment should contact 07437 459 933.

Paula Vanderpeer, head of primary care at gtd healthcare, said working in partnership with the LGBT foundation is really important to us.

"We are acutely aware of the health needs of the communities in which the LGBT foundation represents and the patient demographic of the city itself,” she said.

"This clinic is specifically targeting LGBT people with HIV as they are at high risk of serious influenza-related complications. Therefore, it is really important that this patient group is vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

"Studies have shown that LGBT people can feel reluctant to talk openly to their GP and may avoid appointments because of fear of prejudice so we really do welcome the opportunity to play our part in breaking down these unfortunate barriers.”

City Health Centre is one of 11 GP practices and one of three walk-in services operated by gtd healthcare in Greater Manchester. The practice is progressing its discussions with the LGBT foundation to further enhance and support future services being offered at the centre.
