A newly appointed gtd healthcare nurse has enrolled onto the General Practice Nurse Fellowship Programme, which is the first of its kind to be rolled-out in Greater Manchester.

Jessica Bowers, practice nurse at Hattersley Group Practice, joined the organisation with a background in community nursing, palliative care and rehabilitation and has signed up to the training to support her transition into primary care. She is the first from the organisation to take part in the pilot.

The course runs for two-years and provides a structured induction, tailored learning workshops, access to experienced mentors and coaching, and development opportunities. Along with her training, Jessica will work with her immediate team to put her learning into practice and provide high-quality patient care.

Jessica said since she joined gtd healthcare she has received ample support and encouragement in her new role from peers on the programme and across the organisation.

“At the start, I was overwhelmed by the difference in the role of a practice nurse and found it challenging to understand when to apply my knowledge. However, the fellowship training has been fantastic and provided me with useful tools and techniques, which have led me to build on my confidence and helped me settle into the role.

“The programme allows me to really step back, reflect and evaluate myself. This has enabled me to identify my gaps in knowledge and the areas where I need further development.

“One of the first steps within the programme is to acknowledge the support system around you and it encourages you to build on your networks and relationships to create a strong foundation. My colleagues' support has made me feel much more comfortable in my new role. I can’t praise the training that I have received enough.”
