gtd healthcare is leading a new primary care pilot designed to support safer, more consistent identification of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
The DETECT VTE pilot is being delivered in partnership with Thrombosis UK, who selected gtd healthcare as the sole organisation to test the initiative. The pilot went live across all GP practices in November 2025.
The initiative introduces a clinical decision-support tool that runs in the background during consultations, prompting clinicians to consider VTE when recognised risk factors are present. Where appropriate, clinicians can continue with their usual consultation or use a dedicated VTE data-entry template to enable a clear, structured and safe assessment.
Sharon Collins, VTE lead, said the pilot represents an exciting opportunity to enhance quality and consistency in care.
“Being selected by Thrombosis UK to test this approach is a real privilege and recognises the quality and ambition of care being delivered across gtd healthcare,” she said.
“Early identification of VTE is critical, yet it can be challenging in primary care where symptoms are not always clear. Having a tool that prompts timely consideration helps ensure patients with potential risk factors are assessed consistently, supporting safer clinical decision-making and earlier intervention.
“The quality improvement team is sharing monthly reports with Thrombosis UK to help track progress and capture learning throughout the pilot.
“I’m really looking forward to understanding the overall impact of this work, which has the potential to shape national practice and contribute to meaningful, positive improvements in patient care.”
Colleagues are encouraged to actively engage with the tool to maximise insight from the pilot and support patient safety.
